A) Watch Silver Linings Playbook. (dvd) 2hr2min (you should have approximately 30 minutes at the end of class on Monday, 12/19)

B) As you watch, you will take notes on the film, using the attached handout.  In this handout, you are to observe and note behaviors and symptoms for each character.

C) If there is time: In a handwritten or typed paragraph, please answer the following questions. These should be  submitted to Mr. Montas at the end of the class.

For one of the characters on the character,

A. Did the movie accurately portray the symptoms of the disorder?

B. How did this disorder impact the character’s relationships with others?

C.. Did the disorder impact the character’s overall level of function?

D.. Discuss any inaccuracies and misconceptions perpetrated of the disorder in the movie.

Students are to head to the library and complete an article search on one of the following topics:

• Dissociative Identity disorder
• Munchausen by Proxy
• Depersonalization/derealization disorder
• Conversion disorder
• Factitious Disorder

Then they are to type one page that shares their thoughts and reactions to the article they found.

1. Summarize the main idea of the article in three sentences or less. This should communicate to your audience what the article is generally about and it answers the question, "Why is this significant?" Your summary should be its own separate paragraph.
2. For the remainder of your paper, consider these questions (though you you not have to answer them): What are the strengths and weaknesses of the text? What did you find surprising or interesting?
3. Make sure to attach a copy of the article to your pape

Welcome back from break!

This week we are going to finish up our presentations on personality disorders, complete a therapy project, and start learning about Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder.

Personality Disorders Research Project

Each student will research the following criteria for their selected personality disorder. Please be sure to use reliable sources. You may choose to create a power point, prezi or any other visual display of your disorder (how about a pamphlet or a poster board?). You will be required to present your disorder to the class.
1) symptoms / how it presents itself
2) prevalence / causes
3) how do theorists/ therapists explain the disorder
4) treatment
5) examples in popular culture (films, tv, art, etc...)

Course Description: In this English elective, we will begin the class by familiarizing ourselves with aspects of abnormal psychology. The we will move onto literature, not only looking at characters in literature who are unusual in a variety of ways, but also at the authors who personal obstacles are finding their way into their works. Our discussions will explore what society considers “normal’ behavior and how that is reflected in the works we will read.
